Aftermath of floods in south-eastern
Ethiopia: The serious flooding that affected lower reaches of the Shebelle,
Ganale and Weib rivers in Ethiopia's Somali Region in October/November
abated significantly during December. However, many thousands of
people remain displaced and unable to return home due to damaged roads
and difficulties in accessing some areas which are still very marshy.
Accordingly, relief operations were facing severe logistical constraints.
Concerns are now rising over the threat posed by diseases such as
malaria and severe dysentery. Also, animal diseases such as foot
rot arising from prolonged exposure to wet, muddy soil conditions are reported
to be on the increase. (UNDP-EUE: Monthly Situation Report for Ethiopia,
